How should a corporation or organisation efficiently communicate with their customers,
employees or other relations?
Personal communication is often the best way. But it’s also
the most time consuming and expensive. Different solutions for automation of this kind
of information has been developed. IT systems have the ability to send and receive email.
Unfortunately email still isn’t the right thing for the mobile human being, because:
- Most mobile users in Europe and America don’t use email on their mobile phone.
Instead they use a PC (their own or at a internet cafe). A PC isn’t always available,
especially not for very mobile people.
- Mailboxes full of spam have become problem. Inportant messages may “drown in a
sea of spam”.
- Several technologies cometit in providing IP (internet) to the mobile man.
for instance WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) and UMTS (3rd generation mobile tech.).
How the mobile IP future looks like, is not clear. For some mobile people, the
PDA/ Pocket PC is an alternative, but not enough to count on.
The mobile alternatives
of today is SMS and voicemail, if you want to count on that the receiver may receive
your message – without checking first. SMS is widespread enough to be a technology
which will count also in the future, and most age groups have are able to read an
SMS message.
According to a re Gartner Group report from late 2002, more European
use SMS than email for messaging.
- 62% of the adult population have a mobile phone
- 41% uses SMS
- 39% uses internet and email.
We can realize some of the
mobile visions already now, by using an existing, widespread and well tested technology – SMS.
